When I was working in an office environment, podcasts were what got me through the day. Even now, if I am driving somewhere or cleaning the kitchen or running on the treadmill, I am probably listening to a podcast. While I listen to a lot of different podcasts, these are my favorites so if you are looking for something new, these are my recommendations. Also, these are my non-food ones. No worries, a whole list of my favorite food podcasts are coming!
Myths and Legends – this podcast is exactly what it sounds like. It covers different legends from around the world with a special feature each week on a magical creature. There is some awesomely bizarre stuff in oral history. I like to think of it as my own Magical History course (ala Harry Potter). I’m so hooked I made my husband and one of my coworkers start listening so I would have someone to gossip with about the episodes.
Sawbones: A Marital Tour of Misguided Medicine – a doctor and her husband share this podcast where they talk about various medical topics and topics in medical history. They are both amusing, but she especially is very knowledgeable.
On Being – a beautiful and thoughtful podcast on various religious and spiritual topics.
Planet Money – an NPR podcast that investigates various financial issues. I started listening to this because I wanted to have smart, economic things to discuss with Z. and remind him how sexy smart his wife is. Then I found myself utterly fascinated by ins and outs of some of the topics. It is worth a listen, even if you don’t think financial topics are your cup of tea.
Travel with Rick Steves – this makes me want to travel everywhere, which is already pretty prevalent. I wish he did more exotic locations, but still a good look at a lot of travel destination. For example, want to know where to find the best Irish folk music? He has a podcast on that.
